Hi,

Windows is capable of downloading all 5 at the same time, they do not
need to be downloaded sequentially.

Just right-click on each of the links to each file, select "Save
Target as" and tell Windows where to save them.

Is this what you needed to know, or is a textbox procedure important
to you?

Clarification of Question by creepo-ga on 12 Apr 2003 15:39 PDT
is a textbox procedure important to you?

i did not know that windows can simultaneously download 5 files at a
time. i will try it out although i feel that with a 56k modem the
downloading might be more efficient if done sequentially. i gave 5
links as an example but there would be occassions that i might want to
download 30 sequentially and if it were possible to enter the links
into a text box of some sort then i would have a visual to check the
completeness of the download - this is why a textbox procedure is
important to me

What you need is a Download Manager program. Many are available as
freeware or shareware - would you like a list of such programs?

Clarification of Question by creepo-ga on 12 Apr 2003 16:05 PDT
yes i would deeply appreciate a list. if you have any personal
experience with anyone of them could you recommend one to me.

your quick response and expert guidance is deeply appreciated. i own
the website playlistplayer.com and would like to instruct others how
they can create their own playlistpllayer mp3 download capability.

again, you have been a great help and you will be hearing from me.. i
have many more questions... is there anyway i can request a specific
expert for a specific question. ( i also own googlehelper.com which i
bought because i am so impressed with google and i want to put helper

Hi,

I installed and tested GetRight Download Manager. It is free and does
everything you want. It's default setting is downloading multiple
files at once, to change it go into Tools > GetRight Configuration.

GetRight
http://www.getright.com/index.html

There are many more available, as listed at Download.com
http://download.com.com/3150-2071-0-1-3.html?

Yes, it is possible to ask for researchers by name, putting "for
xxxx-ga only" in the subject line seems to work best.

Search strategy: went to download.com, searched for "download manager"
and sorted the category by user rating.

Best wishes,

What would be the steps to record streaming audio to CD?

Hi! Thanks for the question.

You must do 3 things to record streaming audio to a CD.

1. You will need software to record the streaming audio on your PC.
Here are articles which provides tips on how to do this.

"How to Record Streaming Audio From Internet Radio Stations and
Sources"
http://radio.about.com/c/ht/02/09/How_Record_Streaming_Audio1032295842.htm

"How to Capture an Audio Stream"
http://www.techtv.com/audiofile/musictech/story/0,23008,3006415,00.html

The About.com website provides a list of software you can use to
capture streaming audio.

"Software To Record Streaming Audio - PC"
http://radio.about.com/cs/recordingstreams/

2. The second thing you have to do to play it in your CD player is to
convert the file first to wav format. If your cd player can play MP3s
then you can burn the audio files directly on the CD-R without the
conversion process.

3. After converting the MP3s to wav files you can then burn the files
to a CD-R and then play it an ordinary cd player.

Our next link provides a guide on how to do both steps 2 and 3.

"How to Convert MP3s to Audio CDs"
http://www.techtv.com/audiofile/story/0,23008,3300580,00.html

Search terms used:
record streaming audio
convert MP3 wav "MusicMatch"

I hope these links would help you in your research. Before rating this
answer, please ask for a clarification if you have a question or if
you would need further information.

Thanks for visiting us.

Another way is to record the sound with the shareware program
TotalRecorder, which can directly save as .wav (although CD burning
software like Ahead Nero can make audio cds out of mp3s without you
first having to convert them to .wav.).

http://www.highcriteria.com/productfr.htm#prod_TR

I've used both Streamripper, mentioned in one of Easterangels
articles, and Total Recorder to record streaming radio stations
(http://www.KCRW.org). I've found Total Recorder better because it
allows me to make each file for example 5 minutes long, so that I can
change tracks easily. Streamripper have got an automatic function
that's supposed to recognice when there actually a new song. That of
course is better, instead of ending up with songs cut "randomly", but
it didn't work for me, and all I got was one huge mp3 with hours of
music, and no simple way of moving to a special segment.

Two things that does make Streamripper better though, is that it's
free, and records the actual stream, and not the soundcard sound,
which perhaps make the quality better.

I use Silent-Bob to capture streaming audio and save it as a WAV file:
  http://www.silent-bob.de/en/

This file can be played directly on your computer or burned to a CD.

I use RazorLAME to encode the WAV file as an MP3 file (CD quality) to
save disk space:
  http://www.dors.de/razorlame/

RazorLAME is a user front end for LAME, which is also necessary:
  http://lame.sourceforge.net/

Hiya...

I am having a strange problem when downloading music files...
I have two audio sites, RealOnePlayer is working great, but the other
( a paid site ) where I download music to works fine until after an
hour or so...
After that, it seems that my pooter gets very very slow...
Is there a correlation between downloading stuff and the speed of my
computer?
As I now have hundreds of tunes downloaded, it just seems when I play
them that my other programmmes are either frozen or just soooo
slooowww...........
Is there a fix for this or is this just the price one has to pay for
hearing good tunes?
Just as I was trying to post this question, I realize it is taking forever :(

steph53...

You state: "the other (a paid site) where I download music to works
fine until after an hour or so...After that, it seems that my pooter
gets very very slow..."

This is saying that your pooter is slowing when downloading songs.

You also say: "As I now have hundreds of tunes downloaded, it just
seems when I play them that my other programmmes are either frozen
or just soooo slooowww..........."

This is saying that when you play songs which you've already
downloaded, that your pooter is slow.

Both of these are likely to be true. Since, as I recall, you have
Windows 2000, you can hit 'Ctrl - Alt - Delete' and bring up the
Task Manager (or go to Start -> Run and type in 'taskmgr')
and click on the 'Performance' tab. This will let you see your
CPU usage as you are involved in these processes.

When downloading a large file, my CPU, which has a speed of
1667MHZ, is being used to the tune of 20-40%, which will
definitely be noticed in the speed of performance of other
programs.

Likewise, when playing an .mp3 file which is already downloaded
to my computer, my CPU usage is about 20%, which will also be
noticeable when 'multi-tasking'. This will be even more
pronounced if you are using a 'visualization' in Real Player,
which displays a graphic image along with the music.

Doing both at the same time - that is, playing a song you've
already downloaded while downloading another from a website,
will bring your CPU usage even higher. I would recommend
downloading first and listening later.

Downloading will have more of an effect on webpages loading in
your browser, since both activities utilize your internet
connection. Playing a song file you've already downloaded
should have less of an impact on the speed of your browser.

If you have a CPU with a speed lower than 1667MHZ, you will
use an even greater percentage of its resources. Whatever
the speed of your CPU, you can monitor its usage with
'taskmgr', under the Performance tab.

You may be able to see the speed of your CPU by right-clicking
on 'My Computer' on your desktop, and selecting 'Properties'.

If you have less than 256MB of RAM (also visible at the bottom
of the window from the last paragraph), you might benefit from
an increase.

Also, even though Windows 2000 is considerably more stable than
Windows 98, and will go much longer without the necessity to
reboot it, you may notice some benefit in rebooting from time
to time. This will return the various resources which Windows
uses to a pristine state, and may improve your performance for
a time.

Please do not rate this answer until you are satisfied that
the answer cannot be improved upon by means of a dialog
established through the "Request for Clarification" process.

Okay...
I did all that...
Pooter has 253,424KB Ram...
The CPU usage shows anywhere from 4% to 7%... no visualization in
RealPlayer at all..
So I suspect thats very little effect on computer.....
However, RealPlayer works just fine with no slowdowns...
Could the "paysite" be draining my pooter?
I do NOT EVER play tunes while downloading as I'm too busy watching
download... I strongly suspect that the paid site is draining my
resources..
If thats the case...Can I get rid of it now as I have used it all up
to my advantage? I got all the tunes I wanted so mabe I should just
delete it now?
Is that an option?

Request for Answer Clarification by steph53-ga on 27 Apr 2003 08:29 PDT

Oops...

Please disregard the pevious numbers in the clarification. I made a
mistake.
When I go to My Computer I find my CPU has a speed of only 1000MHZ.
RAM is 256MB.
In Task Manager, while playing a tune, the speed is anywhere from 13%
to 21% and while downloading, the speed is 16% to 30% which is
noticeably slower than the numbers you have on yours.
This being the case, could the lower numbers be the cause of the
slowness?
Also, per the previous clarification, I found I can't move my
downloaded music from the paid site to my RealPlayer, so deleting that
is not an option.

Thank you kindly...

Clarification of Answer by sublime1-ga on 27 Apr 2003 10:52 PDT

steph53...

Thank you for the report on the CPU and RAM.
A CPU rated at 1000MHZ, or 1GHZ should be more than adequate
for the tasks you are attempting. The numbers you cite from
Task Manager are not the speed of the CPU, but the current
usage - that is, how 'tied up' your CPU is with the tasks
allotted. The fact that your numbers are lower is good. It
means that your CPU is only 20% (or so) 'occupied' with the
processes of downloading or playing the music. This can
still have a noticeable effect on the response of other
programs.

Since you do not name the paysite, and since I cannot
duplicate your results without joining, I can't be certain
about your experience with that site. However, it sounds
very much like the music from the paysite is not being
'downloaded', as such, to your computer, but is rather
being 'streamed', in which case, as noggywoggy-ga notes
in a comment, this may be using up your RAM. You can get
a look at RAM usage under the same Performance tab you
used in Task Manager to view your CPU performance.

Under 'Physical Memory', at the bottom right, you should
see figures for 'Total', 'Available' and 'System Cache'.
If, while listening to the 'streamed' music, your
'Available' memory is low, you might want to invest in
additional RAM, or simply re-start the player you use
with the paysite, as noted by noggywoggy-ga. I would
also recommend closing all browser windows when you do
so, and re-opening them to renew your connection to the
paysite. This will 'refresh' your browser's 'cache' of
memory, as well.

Please don't hesitate to ask for additional clarification,
as needed.

steph53-ga rated this answer:5 out of 5 stars
Thanks sublime1-ga,

I now have a clearer understanding of this. It seems that the music
from the paid site is indeed being "streamed" which results in high
RAM usage. Closing all the browser windows and/or rebooting helps a
great deal.

Thank you also, noggywoggy-ga, for your comment. I thought it was a
problem with just my computer but I now understand that these music
sites can cause the slowness.

Have you noticed that you're memory usage has gone up drastically?
I've noticed on some sites the music you listen to is stored in memory
as you listen to it, and this builds up over time causing problems.
I've encountered this before on some sites and it seems to happen
after an hour or two of music, as you said. The only suggestion I can
make is to restart your player, which is what I always have to do, or
just invest in more ram.
